Vietnamese Sustainable Brickmaking Project (VSBK)

Vietnamese Sustainable Brickmaking Project (VSBK), Vietnam

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC)  2002 - 2010

Amid fast economic growth, Vietnam is consuming over 20 billion bricks per year. Prior to this project, about 80% of these bricks were produced in over 10’000 inefficient wood and coal-fired brick kilns by small enterprises. The high coal consumption and flue gas emissions have resulted in sever environmental pollution leading to social tensions between producers and farmers. The Vietnamese government has therefore decided to modernize the brick industry and eliminating traditional brick making within a period of 10 years.
